EYW wants your food stories!
During the two years that I lived in Hanoi, I would get up early once each week to walk 1 kilometer to indulge my 2nd favorite breakfast treat - Cháo Lòng Gà (rice porridge with chicken "innards" (that... Read more
“French people believe very strongly in the idea of terroir: We believe in locally made products, especially those that have a strong sense...

We asked for pictures and stories of local food from the African continent, wanting to show the world a little something about regional African cuisine. Photos from Morocco, Namibia, and Ethiopia; stories from Senegal and Seychelles; South African bunny chow and Mauritanian goat rings—we heard all about it! But there can be only one winner, and it’s a Food Memory we chose this time, all the way from Kenya.
User alexfhalpern wrote the winning entry, entitled “We Came to Eat Fish.” Why do we love this story? It’s a well-written tale of a basic grilled fish dish enjoyed on the shores of Lake Victoria, but like elsewhere in Africa, it’s not just about the food: It’s about the energy of the setting, the sheer “life force” of the lake, humming with those who depend on it for survival and play. It’s about the pride of the Kenyans who brought the author there, four hours out of the way, to feast on fish. It’s about food’s irreplaceable role in bringing people together—providing that simple impetus to go somewhere and eat—opening that cultural window, and then stepping out of the spotlight, as if to say, “You can thank me later.” To us, this captured the essence of traveling and eating in (parts of) Africa.
Read the whole story here, or on the EYW blog.
Alex wins a yearlong subscription to the excellent AFAR magazine, courtesy of AFAR Media. Congratulations!

Contest rules:
To be eligible to win, you must become an EYW user and upload your photo entry OR Food Memory (story) at eatyourworld.com/users. Photo entries must fit the EYW upload criteria (i.e., the featured food/drink must be categorized as either native, traditional, or locavore) for any country in Africa; the food itself must have been photographed in its native land and be accessible to any visitor there. Similarly, stories must be generally about regional food—at a home or in a restaurant/market/shop—in an African country. Only one entry per EYW user is required to enter the contest, though there is no limit on how many photos or stories you can upload. Eat Your World is not responsible for and will not consider as potential contest winners any incomplete or incorrect entries. Management, employees, and families of Eat Your World are prohibited from winning any prizes awarded by Eat Your World. The winner must be 13 years of age or older for this contest. No purchase is necessary to win or improve your chances of winning. To win a paper subscription to AFAR, the winner must reside within the U.S. If the winner lives outside the U.S., he or she will receive a digital subscription through Zinio.
How to enter: Upload your original regional food/drink photo from an African country to Eat Your World, and be sure to fill the text box provided for photo description; OR write and upload a Food Memory about regional food in Africa, from Africa. We will be choosing our favorite entry, so photo/caption and story quality will be weighed. All entries must be uploaded by 11:59pm (Eastern Time) on May 15, 2012. Any photos or text submitted must be your own. Please see our general Terms & Conditions for more information regarding user contributions on this site.
What you win: One one-year subscription (7 issues) to AFAR magazine, valued at $20. The winner will also enjoy some air time: Both the winning photo or story entry and the name of the user who submitted it (including a link to his/her website, if applicable) will be featured throughout the Eat Your World website, including on the home page and contest page, for a minimum of one week. The winning entry will be promoted via Twitter and Facebook as well.
Choosing and notifying winners: The winning entry will be chosen entirely at the discretion of Eat Your World, based on criteria including photo/story quality, description, and overall subject matter. Eat Your World will email any winners of contests a “winner notification email” to the email address provided during the user signup. Eat Your World will mail (if in U.S.) or email (if outside the U.S.) the contest prize to the address supplied by the recipient of the winner announcement email. The winner must claim the prize by email response to the winner notification email within 30 days of the date Eat Your World sent the winner notification email.
