These are just some of the Ecuadorian and Mexican goodies we scored from the Corona Plaza vendors this weekend at the @streetvendorproject’s NYC Street Vendor Scavenger Hunt kickoff event!

Pictured: Ecuadorian sugar-dusted empanada de queso; Ecuadorian llapingachos (cheesy potatoes); Mexican tostada de pollo and tacos al pastor; Ecuadorian morocho (a yummy spiced corn drink that was new to me) and arroz con leche; Ecuadorian stall where our kids requested chicken and chorizo skewers.

Our #EatSomethingNewinQueens team has raised $635 in support of our city’s incredible street vendors, to help provide them support, small biz training, legislative advocacy, and more via the SVP nonprofit. And now we are in 5th place in completing missions for the scavenger hunt!

We have till Dec. 14 to finish the missions—let’s keep it up, team! Thank you to @saritabramowicz, @snack.with.sue, @realtorgetsfit, and Yi-Ling for joining at the event, and @streetvendorproject for organizing and supporting our city’s vendors 🏙 ✨

Vegetarian thali lunch plates, plus chole bhature, dal makhni, and chai, at Maharaja Sweets & Snacks, one of my longtime favorites in Jackson Heights.

The thalis include two veg dishes plus rice, roti/naan, and a little dessert for $8.99. It’s a ton of food! Especially if you start with a chaat (as you should 😋 … dahi puri is pictured, but papri chaat is my fave).

The $15 hornado plate from a Roosevelt Avenue Ecuadorian street cart (corner of Warren St.). Roasted pork and perfectly crisp pork skin piled on top of mote (those fat cooked corn kernels) and fava beans, boiled potatoes, and llapingachos (cheese + potato patties—we requested two, knowing how delicious these are!) … it’s a lot of food and definitely a full meal for the price. We haven’t eaten this in a long while and it really hit the spot.

The Ecuadorian food carts around Warren St. have been there for more than a decade. Vendors are typically generous with samples of fritada (fried pork), though I prefer the hornado. Next time I’ll get the $20 platter so we can share more with the kids—they loved this food!

Guaguas de pan + colada morada: These are two Ecuadorian traditions for Día de los Muertos I recently learned about by walking around our part of Queens.

Particularly around Junction Blvd to Corona Plaza on Roosevelt Ave, you’ll see several vendors and bakeries selling guaguas de pan, “sweet babies” that reminded my kids of bigger gingerbread men 😂. We got ours from Mama Leti’s in Corona.

The colada morada is the traditional drink pairing: a purple corn flour drink served hot and studded with fruits (berries, pineapple, ciruela), flavored with warm spices like clove and cinnamon. I’d take this over a pumpkin spice latte any day!

We tried colada morada from two different vendors, one on 90th and Roosevelt and one near Junction. I preferred the latter because it wasn’t so thick. Leftovers also paired well with a little rum on a Saturday night!

We had an enjoyable lunch here recently of boat noodles (with pork, pork blood, pork meatballs, and vegs) and kao mun gai ped, spicy Thai-style Hainanese chicken with rice and an eye-popping cilantro-garlic-lime sauce … such good flavors! It’s a really pleasant little place to sit outside on Woodside Ave. and chill. Plus there’s @stumptowncoffee to wake you up post-lunch stupor. 🍜🍗☕️

If you’re from certain parts of NJ, you know DISCO FRIES.

It’s the down-and-dirty Jersey spin on Quebec’s poutine: crispy fries smothered in mozzarella and gravy, served at diners around the state, ideally at 2am.

Where I grew up we just called it “cheese fries with gravy” (and it was frequently ordered at 2am!)…but that’s boring compared to “disco fries,” the name more associated with North Jersey diners.

Thanks to @foodigenous, disco fries are now immortalized on our website as an essential North Jersey dish (see link in bio). He suggests ordering it with American cheese for a superior melt. 😋

Recently had the pleasure of eating one of these #burrapizza Cafonata squares from @unregularpizza near Union Square. Holy moly! Whole burrata, pepperoni, hot honey, tomato sauce, ‘nduja—this isn’t your average slice, and it’s priced as such ($11.5 per square). It is, however, a delicious, filling sourdough square. Did we mention the whole burrata??

We also really enjoyed the “unMargherita” slice ($4) and the chicken Parm ($10). I wanted to try everything on the counter. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area!

This is the place that started life as a pizza-bartering business early in the pandemic. They still do occasional pizza barters, so I’m wondering what they’d exchange for a custom Jackson Heights food tour! 🤔
