Where to Get Takeout + Delivery in Queens Right Now

Thai takeout from Queens, NYC

Eds. note: This article currently covers 120+ restaurants in Jackson Heights and Elmhurst. Last update: Jan. 2021.

Takeout from a Queens Thai restaurant during the pandemic

Delivery from Kitchen 79 in Jackson Heights.

If you’re like us, preparing three meals a day gets pretty old by Friday, so every weekend we support local restaurants in Queens via takeout or delivery. For us it also injects a bit of normalcy into our week—Friday night has always been delivery night; Saturdays are for takeout. More than that, it brings into our home a taste of the Jackson Heights we know and love, and miss so dearly during these months of pandemic. Via takeout, we can still support local restaurants and try different dishes that go a long way toward breaking up the weekly routine.

Please remember that calling eateries directly (before ordering from a third-party app) should always be your first course of action—it means the restaurant won’t lose any of the profit from your meal—and they will advise if the third party is needed to cover the distance. Takeout is best from a worker-safety standpoint, and please remember to tip even if you’re picking food up. If you’re unable to do that, tip your delivery person extra generously!

A note about outdoor dining: Where possible, we’ve added where outdoor dining is available. We also note where the so-called outdoor dining structures seem far too enclosed and unventilated. Please use your best judgment.

Takeout spread from the excellent Angel Indian restaurant

Where to Eat in Jackson Heights + Elmhurst

Thai

**Kitchen 79: We’ve long loved this Southern Thai spot for delivery of perfectly crispy pad prik khing, fiery kua kling (a dry curry with ground meat), red and green curries, deep-fried shrimp cakes, and our kids’ favorite kua gai, (nonspicy) wide rice noodles with chicken, squid, and egg, splashed with sesame oil. Takeout or delivery (you can call, or place order via Seamless/Grubhub, Doordash) is available, as is some pretty enclosed “outdoor” seating. Mon-Fri, 11:30am-10:30pm; Sat-Sun, noon-10:30pm. 37-30 79th St.

**Ayada: One of our all-time favorites in the area, this Thai spot is open for takeout and delivery (Seamless/Grubhub), plus has a large outdoor structure with three open doorways. It’s been out of our favorite dish, kaeng som (sour curry) with omelets, lately, but it’s always worth asking for! Otherwise we love the crispy watercress salad, the chive dumplings, the sautéed Chinese eggplant, drunken noodles, any of the curries, shrimp paste fried rice, and much more. Daily, 11am-10pm. 77-08 Woodside Ave.

**SaRanRom Thai: This new restaurant (in the old Paet Rio spot on Broadway) has quickly become a delivery favorite of ours, with terrific versions of now-familiar dishes (massaman curry, green curry, pad Thai, fish cake, papaya salad) and some interesting, delicious dishes we hadn’t tried before, like nam ya pa, vermicelli noodles in spicy anchovy sauce. Open for takeout and delivery (Seamless, Grubhub, Uber Eats), and there’s some pretty enclosed sidewalk seating. 81-10 Broadway

**Hug Esan: Try some delicious Isaan Thai specialties—like nam khao tod (crispy rice salad with sour sausage), pork rice crepes, crab omelet, so many papaya salads and larbs—between noon-9pm daily for takeout and delivery. Call 929-328-0392; order online hugesannyc.com; or use Seamless/Grubhub, Uber Eats, Caviar, Delivery.com, if you must. 77-16 Woodside Ave.

Dek Sen: Another great Thai restaurant. Try the the nam tok moo (pork blood noodle soup), yen ta fo soup, mussel pancake, crispy wonton with shrimp pad Thai, Thai “donuts” or its Insta-famous rainbow crepe cake for dessert. Open 11am-10:30pm for delivery and takeout (Seamless/Grubhub, Delivery.com, Uber Eats). 86-08 Whitney Ave.

Pata Paplean: One positive of this past year is that this funky little Thai bar now offers its incredible noodle soups daily, not just on weekends. Do not miss the nam tok and tom yum noodle soups. Just don’t! Call 718-651-2076 to order takeout or delivery (it’s also on Grubhub/Seamless, Uber Eats), or dine on-site: There are two fully outdoor tables and another “outdoor” section that’s fully enclosed and attached to the restaurant. 76-21 Woodside Ave.

Khao Kang Thai takeout from Elmhurst, Queens

Khao Kang’s 3 entrees + rice (and egg)

**Khao Kang and Khao Nom: These two sister Thai spots—the latter specializes in desserts but also has plenty of delicious savory dishes—are open for takeout. Khao Nom has outdoor seating, but it looks very enclosed (i.e., with doors that close). 76-20 Woodside Ave.; 42-06 76th St.

**Tea Cup Cafe: The little corner eatery specializes in desserts and teas, but its savory game has stepped up in recent year. We love the Thai toasts (as do our food tour guests) but also the fiery larbs and fish tom yum and yen ta fo noodle soups. It’s open for takeout only, as well as some very enclosed “outdoor” dining. 76-23 Woodside Ave.

Boon Chu: This tiny Thai spot is likewise open for takeout and delivery (Seamless/Grubhub). Lots of fish, noodles, curries, and rice dishes await! 83-18 Broadway

Spicy Shallot: Thai food plus sushi is available for takeout or delivery (Seamless/Grubhub, Delivery.com). The restaurant has lots of outdoor seating (with heaters and small plastic dividers), but with the exception of door openings, it’s largely enclosed. 77-01 Woodside Ave.

Black Thai: Another Thai option with great drunken noodles and crispy duck specialties is open for business via takeout and delivery (Seamless/Grubhub, Doordash, Delivery.com). 81-16 Northern Blvd.

Sompong Thai: Also open 11:45am-10pm every day for takeout and delivery, plus it has some (largely) enclosed outdoor seating. You can order directly through its website. 37-09 83rd St.

Arunee (from noon-9pm daily) and the new Thaan Thai, both on 37th Ave., are also open for takeout and delivery.

South Asian

(There is also heated, but very enclosed, outdoor seating.) Do not miss anything with the fresh paneer! The lamb chops are incredible too. Open Tues-Sun, noon-9pm; call 347-848-0097 to order. 74-14 37th Rd.

Papri chaat from Maharaja Sweets

**Maharaja Sweets:
Our favorite local chaat + sweets shop (which also has plenty of main dishes) is open for takeout, and the outdoor dining area is covered but airier than most in this ‘hood (a good thing!). Also, there are heaters! We love the papri chaat and aloo tikki chaat, but this place is locally beloved for its sweets for a reason too. Call 718-505-2680 to order ahead. Daily, 10am-10pm. 73-10 37th Ave.

Samudra: This friendly (mostly) South Indian restaurant is open for takeout and delivery (Postmates, Uber Eats, Caviar), with a few sidewalk tables for those not-frigid days. Get your dosas, idlys, and vadas! 75-18 37th Ave.

Dosa Delight: Dosas and chaats are the thing to order at this (largely) South Indian restaurant. Order takeout or delivery via its website, or eat on-site at one of its few sidewalk tables under the awning. 35-66 73rd St.

Peruvian takeout from a Queens restaurant during the coronavirus pandemic.

Riko Peruvian delivers chaufa, great soups, and more.

South American

Riko Peruvian: Pollo a la brasa with all the fixins, plus good chaufa (Peruvian-style fried rice), lomo saltado, quinoa soup, and more. Takeout and delivery (Seamless/Grubhub, Doordash) is available, as are some outdoor “bubble” tables. 78-14 Roosevelt Ave.

**Antojitos Doña Fela: At a time when few street vendors were open, this popular Peruvian cart was feeding health care workers and the neighborhood every weekend morning and afternoon. Check her Instagram for the menu. Takeout and local delivery (free with $20 order) is available; we highly recommend the trio marino (fish ceviche, perfectly fried fish “chicharron” with yuca, chaufa de mariscos), a deal for $20, but literally everything is delicious. 917-340-4913; NW corner 90th St. & Roosevelt Ave. Weekends, 6:30am-5pm (if you pick up in the afternoon, it might be from her address on 99th St. near 25th Ave.).

Plate of Nepali momos in Jackson Heights, Queens

Nepali-style momos from Nepali Bhanchha Ghar

Himalayan

**Nepali Bhanchha Ghar: Go here to see our friend, owner Yamuna “Bimla” Shrestha, and she’ll reward you with some delicious Nepali home cooking. The thin-skinned Nepali-style momos are terrific, and come in many flavors (chicken, beef, veg, paneer, potato, goat—the aloo, or potato, have become favorites of ours); even better is the fresh jhol, spicy tomato-and-sesame-seed-laced broth, you can pour over them (these are the jhol momo that have won the annual Momo Crawl for three years in a row). There’s also terrific thali here, and Nepali snacks like sel roti, bhatmas sandeko, waiwai sandeko, and samayabajee. Or get some frozen momos for your freezer: 50 pieces for $25 (goat costs $35 for 50). Call 646-861-9147 for takeout or delivery, or use Seamless/Grubhub if you must. (For frozen momos, simply steam 7-8 minutes to reheat.) 74-15 Roosevelt Ave.

El Toum falafel from Jackson Heights

El Toum’s falafel

European + Middle Eastern

El Toum: The old Juju’s space is now a Lebanese eatery run by the same Chef Sami. The falafel is perfection, and the kofta burger is incredible (also the hand-cut fries). Good shawarma too, but ask for white sauce on the side or it will come drenched. Check its Instagram account for specials. Call 718-440-9970 for takeout and delivery (Grubhub/Seamless, Doordash), or try one of the small sidewalk tables out front. (Also, pay with cash or expect extra fees.) 35-62 76th St.

Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese, Indonesian, Malaysian, Filipino, Burmese!

UFC: Satisfy your Korean fried chicken cravings via takeout and delivery (Seamless/Grubhub)—order online via the website if you can. Beer can be delivered too! 71-22 Roosevelt Ave.

Haewoondae Korean Restaurant: This corner Korean spot is open for takeout and “outdoor” dining that’s more like an extension of its interior. We’ve always liked the soups here. 75-32 Broadway

**969 NYC Coffee: We love this little Japanese spot and its friendly owner, Oda, who donated lots of food and money to health care workers in the spring (despite being a one-man show!). Try the onigiri, the sushi, the ramen (including a great veggie version), and the delicious onigirazu sandos (pictured above). Takeout only; call 646-203-7304. 37-61 80th St.

Happy Stony Noodle: Great Taiwanese noodle soups and more are available for takeout and delivery. Order via its website. 83-47 Dongan Ave.

**Warung Selasa: This every-Tuesday Indonesian pop-up at Indo Java Groceries (85-12 Queens Blvd.) has largely been a takeout business since it opened, as the tiny grocery store can accommodate just one lone table for diners. It is open 11am-7pm; follow on Instagram to find the week’s menu (usually posted by Monday night) and call 718-779-2241 to order and schedule a pickup. 85-12 Queens Blvd.

**Taste Good Malaysian: Love the laksas, roti canai, and more at this hole-in-the-wall Malaysian restaurant. Takeout only! 82-18 45th Ave.

Little House Cafe: This delicious little Chinese bakery and Malaysian cafe in Elmhurst is open for takeout, and it appears to be on Seamless for delivery. Check its Instagram account for drool-worthy menu pictures. 90-19 Corona Ave.

Papa’s Kitchen: Jackson Heights’ resident Filipino restaurant is open for takeout and delivery—order online via its website if you can (it’s also on Seamless/Grubhub, Doordash, Uber Eats). Try the adobo, the lechon, and anything with coconut milk! 37-07 83rd St.

Yun Cafe & Asian Mart: This little Burmese takeout shop (or you can eat in Diversity Plaza, if you wish) opened in the subway station mid-pandemic. Enter from the plaza to find it, and do try one of its many made-to-order Burmese salads and noodle soups. This food isn’t easily found, even in Queens, so consider yourself lucky! 73-05 37th Rd, Store #2, lower level

Happy Kitchen (Japanese), Okawa (Japanese), and Spicy Shallot (see under “Thai,” above) are open for takeout and delivery as well. Also see the Tibetan Japanese Restaurant under “Himalayan.” SushiFella is a newer option for sushi delivery in Jackson Heights that’s a must-try!

Takeout from a cheese shop in Jackson Heights

A recent haul from Standalone Cheese.

Other Essentials

Standalone Cheese: Open for takeout only of its wonderful cheeses, breads, pastas, and more. We are obsessed with Sardinian cheese Bianco Sardo, the Castelvetrano olives, the Raffetto’s ravioli, and so much more. Order online and they’ll call you when it’s ready. 79-07 37th Ave.

Table Wine: Open for in-store purchases (limit 3 customers at a time) and pickup; call 718-478-9463 to order ahead. We recommend the long-lasting boxed wine! 79-14 37th Ave.

No Chinese options? Was that an accidental or intentional omission?

It’s simply that none of my favorites have reopened around here (only in Flushing)! However I just saw that East 21 and Woodside Kitchen have reopened, so I’ll add them onto this list. There are a few in Elmhurst that Google claims have reopened, but they’re not answering the phone and I haven’t been able to physically go by yet. Hopefully this week I can find that out on a walk. In the meantime we’ve gotten our Chinese food in Flushing.

Thank you. Very helpful for this special time and letting me know of places in the neighborhood I’ve not tried yet.
