Paua, or abalone, a.k.a. large sea snails, were originally hunted and gathered by the Maori for their meat and beautiful shells. These days the meat is minced up, formed in a pattie and then deep-fried. The batter was pretty good and the paua tasted like a good and salty sea creature.
