Avena

A tall glass of avena from Bakery San Gil in Colombia.

What: A sweet, creamy, chilled oatmeal drink that’s usually consumed with breakfast. It’s surprisingly thick, generally made with milk, sugar, cinnamon, and oats. Although it’s bright white in color, it doesn’t taste milky—just super sweet and smooth. It is also known as quaker, after the oats brand.

Where: Most bakeries will sell avena by the glass. (Our pic is from Bakery San Gil, on Carrera 11 in San Gil.)

When: Try one in the morning with some freshly baked breads.
