Bread pudding has never really been my thing, but that all changed last night. At 10:11 PM on a Saturday, I ditched a standard Saturday night of bar crawling, to instead feed my curiosity towards what the hype about bread pudding is really all about.
Susina Bakery [now closed] is revered in all of Los Angeles’ culinary blogs, especially those written by sugar addicts with insatiable sweet tooth’s. They often rave about the same one of their specialties: Mixed Berry Brioche Bread Pudding. Served smack in the middle of a pool of rich red berry sauce, which is as deep and bold with tartness as a fine merlot, this dessert deserves its reputation.
All my prior experiences with bread pudding have been soggy. I make an association with overripe mush when I think of the times that I’ve tried it.
Susina’s Mixed Berry Brioche Bread Pudding changed all that, and sets the bar for what all bread puddings should be. The brioche is soaked in a creamy, but not too heavy, custard, that has the faintest notes of cream cheese frosting, whether or not cream cheese is in the actual recipe- there are so many flavors in this sweet delicacy, I’d be surprised if anyone could identify the source of each one. The custard bathes the brioche in a perfect amount too, which leaves the middle, flaky chunks still a bit pleasantly dry- there is still some texture to chew on, rather than spoon and gulp like squashy oatmeal that many other bread puddings often are. The sauce-poached berries that adorn the top are just as irresistible as the rest of the plate, which I personally took as nature’s way of saying, “Don’t worry, these come from the earth, this is good for you!”. So I went ahead and finished it. And that was only one of the three desserts that Val and I could not help but order for ourselves. The details of those will have to be reserved for another, appetite-inducing time.
Upon further research investigation (for ways I could justify to myself having demonstrating my Clean Plate Club badge on all three desserts), I was reminded that berries are not only considered to be a ‘superfood’, but also may help prevent the affects of diabetes.
Aha! So I DID do something good for my health- I decreased my chances of diabetes! If only I hadn’t eaten the other two desserts…
